Joseph Knight

Joseph Knight is an important figure in Scottish history. He was born in Guinea, West Africa. His real name is unknown to this day, as is to what people he belonged to before being seized into slavery and transported to Jamaica as a child. We do not know when he was born. He was sold to John Wedderburn of Ballendean, a Scottish landowner who was rich by a sugar plantation he owned in the West Indies. Wedderburn returned to Scotland in 1769, bringing Joseph with him as his domestic servant for his mansion in Perth. Knight successfully appealed against a Scottish court’s decision that considered him as property. This victory confirmed that Scots Law could not uphold the institution of slavery in Scotland, this would pave the way for the abolition of slavery in Scotland and wider Britain. This painting is an imaged scene by myself. I wanted to picture Joseph having a secluded moment to himself, surrounded by nature. As though we had stumbled on him enjoying a moment of peace
